Sintering is a thermal cycle consisting of heating the compacted part for a certain time to a temperature below the melting point of the base metal. The high temperature causes the welding of the powder particles to each other, and the diffusion of the alloying elements, by means of a solid-state diffusion mechanism.
Sintering is carried out in continuous furnaces, at controlled speed, and in an atmosphere with controlled chemical composition. It is normally operated at temperatures between 750 and 1300ºC depending on the material and the characteristics to be achieved.
The result of these basic operations is a metal part with a certain microporosity, of high dimensional precision, and perfectly functional if the characteristics obtained are adapted to the specifications of the component.
